In memoriam: some Texans
It's hard to believe, still, there will be no more Texas Tornados, Sir Douglas Quintet or Doug Sahm albums, because the ultimate American roots rocker passed away. His ideas live on in my show, American Music. A perfect vehicle to play Doug Sahm's music in all its versatility.
I had the pleasure of meeting Doug Sahm several times. These pictures were taken in Brussels (1984) and Doug turned out to be a nice person, not spoiled by succes, and always willing to talk about his music.
This shot, also taken in Brussels, one of the many places in Europe he was a welcome guest with his Quintet, and later with the Texas Tornados.
On the same show, Butch Hancock appeared and that was a memorable visit.
I met Butch in 2002 and this is prove that we met before, and well 18 years ago. So fortunately, he's still alive.
Although the Texas Mavericks were hidden behind masks, every insider could tell from left to right: Speedy Sparks, Alvin Crow, me, Mike Buck, Doug Sahm and John Reed. Fantastic gig, showing the rockabilly side of Sir Douglas.
Once more, Rainer Zosel of Z-Concerts in Germany put a great line-up together for his two day festival in Ludwigshafen. Among the artists was Waylon Jennings.
And of course, Jessi Colter did her part of the show. It's sad Waylon is no longer among us, and Jessi's left out in the cold.
Waylon was one of many many artists featured in my shows.
